I have had great luck with placing Fabric Softener sheets in several places in the books. Leave them on for a couple months, then discard.
put a clothe-pin on your nose
Put a smelly book in a plastic bag with a couple of cups of clay cat litter. In a week or so, the smell will be gone. The clay absorbs it so it's gone, not just covered up.
Try placing dryer sheets in them for a week then remove.
I clean out my book shelf, wipe all the books down with a little vinegar, dawn water and dry. Then when I put them back in the book shelf I add Bounce fabric sheets (used) between every few and behind. It really helps and I haven't noticed that awful musty smell.
