What bushes are you referring to
I was taught to trim flowering bushes right after they love their flowers and all other bushes when needed, except for fall. If you trim in fall, it promotes new growth that will be killed at 1st frost.

It depends on the bush. If it is a flowering bush that blooms in spring you will want to prune it right after it flowers. If you do it too late in the season it might not flower for the next spring. Otherwise all of my other bushes I prune in spring and sometimes again in fall.
Spring is usually best
I have flowering bushes and also burning bushes.
Flowering bushes should be pruned immediately after the flowers have stopped, burning bush can be pruned at any time.
