OK good quality acrylic paint will work. However, you need to sand and prime the surface before you apply the paint.
A good oil-based primer, like Kilz, is essential. Surface should be roughed up, too, before priming.
I did it in my kitchen. It's the primer that makes the difference. They sell them for tile. After the primer, I just used a semi-gloss paint. I think I should have used a high gloss paint to make it more shiny though. It would have looked more realistic if I colored the grout lines a different color. It's been six years and no peeling at all.
