Get in touch with the Welder and ask him to do a better job this time........................
We just had both side rails extended for Queen size - - it must be iron for it to hold a weld. You can quickly tell by using a magnet.....if it sticks, it's iron ! Yours may be the more usual pot metal in which case there would have to be another solution, maybe even replacing the rails with iron ones. Not expensive, takes a little looking. Or just use angle-iron maybe. Hope you find the solution as it is doubtless a beautiful old bed. Good luck !

If its only been a month, I would go back to the original welder. He might want to use a better electrode like nickel and do a double pass.
welding cast iron is special stuff and the welder has to be needs to be "qualified
