How to safely aerate ? Can the glass inserts be changed to operable ones? Now we open doors at the risk of birds, & others coming in.

Yes you can buy a side lights that opens, but don't you have a screen door on the door? Put pet proof screening in it.

Here's an example of one that opens, but I would have the hinges set to open inward, and put your pet proof screen on outside. Plus its not so obvious it open to passerby/burglers, and make sure it has a bolt/lock

You might be able to get a door company modify yours to hinge open, so get some quotes. or contact a cabinet maker locally.

Try one of those screens you see on TV that have magnets to close it. You'll get plenty of air with that and it cost about $30. You can put it up 123, and take it down just as fast. Good Luck!
