Brick is very easy to paint. I have one brick wall in the kitchen and painted it in a few spots just for the affect. Choose the color you want and paint it to look like it did before the mishap, or go with a different look. I found it was easier to dab the paint on with a piece of natural sponge.
If it is real brick you could try cleaning it with the aerosol version of Scrubbing Bubbles. Let sit a few minutes then wipe off with a dampened towel. It works for soot and dirt, so maybe it will work for water stains too. You can lightly scrub the cleaner with a brush too.
I would suggest some kind of mild acidic cleaner designed for masonry. I am doubtful that regular detergents will work. I would try it in a small unobtrusive area first to make sure the results are what you want.
