we use a small tiller in the areas that need the most work, they reseed and some straw and lots of water

Good Morning Jerry S. Gay :) I remember my dad aerating our lawn when I was a child. He used to rent some big roller with spikes on it and push it across our lawn just like he did when he cut the grass. I have also seen shoes with spikes on them that you can wear and aerate the lawn, supposedly, by walking around on your lawn.
