If that was my table I'd try some old fashioned paste wax made for furniture. It might be hard to find. Johnson's Paste Wax would be a good one to look for. You should test it on the underside on in a less conspicuous place. Rub it on, let dry then buff off similar to shoe polish. Then repeat several times to build up a nice sheen. Take the table outside when you wax it because it can have a bit of a smell.
Do not use car wax on your furniture.
I like using Polycrylic. It seals it, and it's water based, so it's easy to clean up.
What do you want to do with it? If you want to refinish it or paint it...after you sand it down, use a wood conditioner on it before you apply fresh stain or paint!! I generally use wood conditioner on any piece that I will be staining. Depending on what you want to use it for, you can pick your finish accordingly...I use wax on pieces that won't see heavy use or be near water or the kitchen. For heavy use items or items that will be exposed to moisture or the kitchen, I use poly!! Hope this helps.
