“Caruso” was written by Italian singer-songwriter Lucio Dalla in 1986. It is dedicated to Enrico Caruso, a legendary Italian tenor of the late 19th and early 20th century. He was born and raised in a poor family, and lived a rather unhappy life. Enrico Caruso had many challenges and problems with Italian opera houses. Most of his problems were caused by his love affairs. Enrico was always involved with married women in the performing arts, which often ended badly. Besides women, Caruso also had a great love for Sorrento. That’s where he spent his last years, and that’s where he died.

The song “Caruso” tells about the pain and longings of a man on his deathbed, as he looks in the eyes of the woman he loves. Lucio Dalla visited Sorrento and stayed in the same room Caruso had spent some time before dying. The owners of the hotel told Dalla about the last days of Caruso. Dalla was inspired by the love story of Caruso and a local young woman, who has been taking singing lessons with him and was 20 years younger. Together they had a daughter, Gloria. Caruso left this world surrounded by the loved ones in his beloved Sorrento, which was “a true corner of his soul”.

Lucio Dalla’s official video of the song “Caruso” was filmed at the Vesuvio Hotel, where Enrico Caruso died. The single was certified platinum by the Federation of the Italian Music Industry.
