Stick to specific FURNITURE leather cleaners if you can. Even saddle soap is not recommended on couches.
My coloured leather couch is not in great shape, and I followed all the cleaning and conditioning tips recommended by the manufacturer, so I would be very careful about alternatives.

I have six pieces of leather and fake leather white furniture. I clean with a white cloth (terry) wrung out in hot water. One chair that gets a ton of wear, I wash with the water/rag thing but use a bar soap like Zote or Fels Naptha. I also remove that chairs seat cushion and take it to the sink so I can do a thorough rinsing job.
Wipe leather regularly with a dry microfiber cloth to get rid of smudges and light soiling. For a deeper clean, use a commercial leather cleaner or make your own. Mix a solution of warm water, a few drops of Castile or liquid dish soap and a few drops of vinegar. Dampen a cloth with the solution and wipe down surfaces.
