I am unclear as to what to do with this part of my house, "The Breakfast Nook".
This type of fireplace tends to leak out smoke. This can sometimes be controlled by opening the damper, but even then, it may not resolve the problem completely. This can better be avoided by installing a glass door on each side and keeping one closed while in another room.
Does this happen only when you start a fire or the entire time it's lit? If it's only in the beginning it's not drawing. Best to warm up the flue and it "catches" before building a big fire. We had a cabin that smoked and we had to extend the fireplace stack and build it up 5 more feet. Builders made it too short. Then in our house we had electric heat so no furnace and no duct work. House was as tight as a drum. Fireplace insert people told us to crack a window in that room until the smoke catches and was drawn up the flue.
How about replacing the gasket door?
