I painted my old formica counter top. How can I protect it?

what product shout I use to preserve it from flaking and to make it durable?
I first glued brown paper to it, but did not like the effect so I painted over it. That's why there are wrinkles on it. I'm hoping to use a product that will smith it all out.

It's not going to smooth out. If you didn't like the way it looked after you put the bags on, you should have removed them. Now, what you should do is sand the countertop down and repaint. Then seal it with Min Wax Polycrylic. Let dry thoroughly and seal it again. It may take 3 coats to get a really durable finish. And even then, I wouldn't put anything hot on it. Always use a trivet of some sort.

Yea, I know that is the right thing to do, but it sounds like too much work. This is a house in the Keys and there is currently no power, so it is very hot. I am just trying to get it ready for a rental.. thankyou for your input.

I would put down some marine epoxy over it, its self-leveling and very good in wet environments.

I would be careful using non food grade fixes for countertops where food will be prepared. Some of these suggestions sound really toxic.

We used Envirotex Lite on our painted countertops -- it's very easy to use and self-levels to a 1/8" thickness, I believe...glossy finish as well. As with ALL epoxies, you should never chop/cut or put pots/pans, etc. directly on the countertop but use trivets and/or cutting boards.
