Truthfully, you can't totally get rid of fire ants, but you can decrease the population with ant traps or boric acid(borax). We use ant traps around our cats, but not boric acid because it's toxic to them should one put its nosy little paw in it
I use the following on our ants. I don't know if it will work with fire ants, but it can't hurt to try! soak a cotton ball in the following solution and place beside every ant hill you see. You may want more than one around a fire ant hill.
To keep away from children and pets, you can put the cotton ball in a used plastic container like a margarine tub with 2 or 3 ant sized holes poked around the bottom. Set the container beside the ant hill.
Ant Bait Solution
1 1/2 Cups warm water
1 1/2 TBSP Borax (make sure it's Borax)
mix until dissolved
add
1/2 Cup Sugar
mix until dissolved.
Store in airtight container.
THIS IS TOXIC TO HUMANS AND PETS
: )
Pour some gas in their hole. The fumes will penetrate the tunnels. Step back, toss a match. Poof! Ant gone.
WE tried everything to get rid of fire ants in our 1 acre yard! We had mounds everywhere and nothing worked, not poison, not bait, nothing. Then we learned about cornmeal. It kills them because they cannot digest it. We used Jiffy cornmeal because it is sweet and they take it back to the queen and the colony dies. Put plenty on to cover each mound or where you find them. Reapply if it rains or you see a few still around. WE hardly ever had to reapply more than once. Our yard was cleared of them! They were in the field around our yard so I kept cornmeal in my pantry to reuse if they came back to the yard, but basically that was only in spring usually. This is safe for children and pets, inexpensive, and does not hurt the environment. I carried it on the riding mower and stopped only long enough to cover the hill from where I sat. We never had any trouble after our first year of applying the cornmeal. I guarantee it works! We used on box on about 5 hills, depending on how big were the hills. Use it on every hill or potted plant. This will kill any ant by the way.
cornmeal does work, i agree- good luck :)
