If you make a faux nest from a paper bag and gray paint, they will not try to build there as they are territorial.
I would call a professional before putting myself at risk - am allergic to yellow jackets and wasps.
I have used the paper bag disguise, works great.
The only way to get rid of wasps/hornets is to kill spray the nest after dark. Check in the morning to kill any lingerers. They will only try to kill you if you use vinegar, that is only like tear gas to them. The next best solution is to contact a pest control company in your area who knows the particulars of the pests in your particular area. Maybe first resort is your Co-operative Extension Service. Every state has it's own Co-operative Extension Service thru each State's University.
