We have ground squirrels in ours... they are really cute when they are little but are a real pest when stealing my peaches and baby apples. The only organic way we have found to get rid of them is to encourage the feral cats to hang around and help keep them in control. We get rattle snakes here in AZ, and it is recommended that to eliminate the snakes eliminate the food source, ie: the ground squirrels. The only other way to get rid of the ground squirrels/gophers is the cyanide bombs that you light and push into the holes. We try and do this in the late fall and early winter when the squirrels are hibernating. There are several brands "Amdro" "Gopher Getters". This cuts the population down quite a bit, we do it primarily close-ish to the house and garage.. to push the population out away from the buildings and the garden.
mounds of dirt? Could it be moles? farm supply stores sell whirligigs that make an annoying noise to run them off. You could adopt a little terrier to keep them gone.
