Appropriate stencil around plain mirror in small master 3/4 bath?

Mainly my hub's BR. Likes ornate but practical too. Would a stencil on 3 sides of the mirror look right? The mirror bottom sits on the backsplash. I gotta make this bathroom look better. Small mahogany vanity, cream lavatory, pale rose pink (!) tile on floor. Wall paint in limbo (some shade of white?). Thinking stencils around mirror, hanging happy pictures. What do you think? I would make the stencil, not buy, so fairly simple.

  • @Vicki K You could use and inexpensive wood molding (or two side by side) to create a gorgeous frame on the three sides of the mirror then you could paint it or stain it the mahogany shade of the vanity . You could use square medallions on the corners so you would not even have to miter the corners. This could give your husband's bath a more masculine feel too.

I can't figure if I glue it to the mirror, there will be a gap of 1/4" to the walls from the mirror. If I get picture molding to fit that, then there will be a 1/4" gap across the bottom where the mirror sits on the backsplash -- I can't figure it out! Can you help me?

@Vicki K If you use two sided/ 1/4 or corner molding on three sides and cut in half and attach to bottom of mirror. Miter cut the corners, like picture frame, and the whole thing glued together can be spot glued to the mirror.

Choose the stencil design you think would go best, then stencil the mirror with a chalk marker. If you like the results, wash it off and use paint. If you don't like the results, wash it off and start over.

I was going to stencil the wall around the mirror, but it's textured, hm. May have to rethink this. I've got to spruce it up somehow! Thanks.

@Vicki K Sorry, I thought you meant you wanted to stencil ON the mirror. If stenciling around it, you could stencil on pieces of paper, tape them to the wall around the mirror, and see if you like the look. There's no reason you can't stencil on a textured surface.

Ok! Should I buy a stencil brush or will wadded up paper towels do? He said he'd like a Celtic design, I can make that. Now the colors for the wall and the stencil. Gad. So many "can't's" to work around, but I'm gonna get it!! Thanks a lot for your help!!

I stenciled a whole wall on a textured wall so it can be done.
