This maple tree may have been hit by lightning, or the roots may have died. Trim it and this should fill back out, just fine. Also, dig down around the trunk of the tree, and put peat soil there, and make sure this is moist. This will give it a good boost for a good soil, when winter comes. Make sure there is no power lines around the tree also. Best wishes, J.
