are you asking which color to use or how to do it without getting paint everywhere?
Just pick a color that you like and go for it! Should coordinate with your wall color. Lighter colors make the room feel bighter and bigger and darker colors, more cozy and closed in. Does that help any?
You can paint your ceilings the same way you paint your walls, unless you have popcorn ceilings, acoustical tile, etc.
Is your ceiling made of something hard to paint? If so, let us know what the material is and I bet someone can give you some really great information as to how to deal with it.

Buy colored ceiling paint from a paint store. Ceiling paint is very inexpensive. Just use a roller with a long extension handle. Voila!
Try a paint that is white or a light color, then make the walls a little darker, not too dark. Good Luck!
We're so used to seeing ceilings in white-- a holdout from the time when the white was meant to give us the feeling that the room was bigger-- that the idea of color can be a HUGE step. Throw out the idea that you have to please some design expert and realize that the person you need to impress on this is yourself.
The color you pick can be a lighter shade of one of the wall's colors-- a nod to the white, but your own new take. Or you can be bold and draw one of the colors on the wall up onto the ceiling. Or you can break the rules of the four walls and let the ceiling be a new complimentary or contrasting color. Design Seeds offers up palettes of colors that are quite nice if you want to give the entire room a makeover.
Painting the ceiling darker makes the ceiling appear higher. One look that I find to be just warm and inviting is a softly colored ceiling with white, off-white or ivory walls.
My suggestion is to look at as many ideas as possible to not only get comfortable with the idea, but to see what you can do. Here are a few places to look:
