I need a simple but effective way of using decomposed granite, not necessarily for a pathway, but general yard area where we need to keep grass down.

Just use weed fabric and 2 or more inches of granite preferably with a metal edge.
Put down landscape fabric to prevent the grass from coming up, and put the decomposed granite on top.
