The best way to clean any wood furniture that has an intact finish is to use a slightly damp terry cloth wash cloth that has been dampened with water and a little bit of Dawn. (Do not use Murphy Oil Soap) It will clean years of Pledge build up off and reveal the shine your furniture had when it was new. It will take some elbow grease and patience but it works. Never use pledge or other products that say they will leave a shine. The shine they leave is an oily residue that will only attract more dirt and dull your furniture. Just use a slightly damp cloth to dust.
Sometimes alcohol will work; if not, and if it's glue (likely), you could try Goo-B-Gone -- but note that butane lighter fluid is the same kind of stuff and cheaper.

What about 'solvent'? Smells like nail polish remover, but it could be too harsh. You could try on a small patch where no one can see.
