I have that "older" mobile home! It is tough to be able to have that "make over feel" I have all paneled walls that were dark, dirty and very unappealing! Solutions were unrealistic. So I took a chance.. I washed all my walls with Pinesol first and then rinsed, though not the ceiling. I used spackling compound and filled in the groves in every panel wiped excess off with a wet sponge while it is still damp (leave spackle in grooves) When spackle is really dry (overnight) I used Kilz flat white, 2 coats using a roller that mimics texture after you paint (ask at the paint store) drying between each layer. I also painted the cheap cardboard type ceilings, same paint, making sure to get those seamed areas well painted (missed some of mine and it is very obvious) It is washable as well! The difference is amazing! Even though it seemed like a long process, It went by quickly and inexpensively. My real estate agent said it improved the value by more than $15k! It is so much brighter, lighter and smells fresher than ever! I am half done with the whole house (double wide over 30 years old) Enjoy the process!
WE bought one and painted the walls, laid new carpet in bedrooms, and faux-wood floors (laminated) in the living/dining areas.
Hi Sheryl. We recently acquired an older camper, and I also wanted a way to spiff it up and make it look less dated. I painted some of the wood because there was just too much of it. It really lightened it up and made it look more spacious. We replaced the flooring and ran the same pattern all the way through. That also helps to make it feel more roomy. My next project is to put up Smart Tiles in the bathroom around the mirror and the backsplash in the kitchen. Smart Tiles are sheets made of a gel-like material that look like real ceramic tile. They are resistant to heat, but are not recommended for showers, baths, or floors. They are sold at Lowe's, Home Depot, Amazon.com, and Wayfair.com. There are many styles and colors to choose from. Hope this helps with your trailer. Best of luck to you!
There's lots of awesome tutorials here on Hometalk: http://www.hometalk.com/categories/remodeling-renovating/trailers
Lots of folks also get rid of the carpet and go for either laminate flooring or the vinyl planks that look like wood. I have made curtains for some of my clients who live in RVs and mobiles too. Many paint their kitchen cupboards for a new look also.
