I think I would carefully remove the mirror from the frame and replace it with a new one. If it is very large, ask a mirror company for their advice.

Since it is that old, I would entertain appraisals from reputable antique appraisers or dealers before modifying. If not worth a fortune, what do you want to do to it? Stain? Paint?
I had to take my mirror to a nearby town to get resilvered for my antique hall tree. The large city did not have place to get this service. You would have to look on internet to see where you can get this done in your area.
