I found that water right out of the tap made my spider plant get spots! So I let the water sit over night and then watered. No I don't have a softener, just a very picky plant.
Don't overwater it - once a week is enough, also it likes a misting every few days.... Is it in full sun? If so, give it a break. And if it doesn't get any sun at all, give it some once or twice a week!

I soak mine weekly so the soil gets completely wet. Not a cup of water every so often. I can tell if they need more water because the leaves turn a greyish green. Spiders need to be potted up every so often as they grow a lot of roots.
I always misted mine to keep the tips from turning brown.
Spider plants are very easy to maintain. Only water when dry to the touch and make sure the water is not cold
