You can cut them back but if you want them to come back in the spring shake some of the heads over that area to drop the seeds.

I am sorry I can not really your answer question, but I have been enamoured by Black Eyed Susans for a while now, so this summer I picked some growing wild in Maine. I planted them in my yard in ME and also in MA and I do hope they come back next year. Most of the ones planted in ME look as though they would grow the last time I was there , but the ones in MA don't look too hopeful. I keep watering them as much as possible with high hopes and cut them back to about two inches to the ground. I think if they can grow in the wild, they can grow in my yard!

It all depends on if you like the texture there for the winter. I do. And as to the next crop, it will come up anyway. You can cut back in the Spring any scraggelies left.
