ive seen the kit where they remove the tub and
put a shower in. What do you think of it? I'm in a tight budget and my house is very old.

Pat, I was in your situation and did the whole tub removal, etc. I thought afterward it would have been better to work with the tub I had and modernize around it. I was not happy in the end with the space the shower enclosure took up (vertical as well as square footage) and the cost was far over my budget in the end. You are so right to question before you jump into the project!

I like the idea myself, but one thing to consider is resale, if it is your only bathroom. Some people like baths, and people with small children will absolutely require a bathtub.

Removing a tub, and putting in a shower in the space sounds like a simple switch out. However a large part of the cost and work involved in completing the job will be for preparing the walls and other surfaces, such as floors, both after the tub comes out and before the shower goes in. The old areas and the new areas will have to be retrofitted together to ensure the area is waterproof, and the plumbing is to current building codes.

It can be done very successfully, although it won't be cheap, so it is good to check into the whole picture before making any decisions.
