We have teeny red ones that bite... we found that the "AMDRO" fire ant "crystals" work quite well. you only need a small (around a 1/2 teaspoon) placed around the entry tunnel... the ants carry it into the tunnel, feed it to the queen, and the ants are gone.. It even worked on the ants that came up in the concrete joints on our patio. We just apply it to new tunnels as new colonies move in. If I am worried that the dog might get to it.. I just invert a plastic crate or an old basket over it for a few days.
I too like Amdro products for ants, etc. I've used the crystals, I also have used the ant traps fairly successfully. Outdoors, I put them where I've seen ants, and to keep other animals from getting them, I put a plastic crate or flower pot, etc. Indoors, they're fine under the kitchen sink, in bathroom cabinets, as long as you put them where kids and pets cannot get to them.
Mix sugar and borax in a small dish. Ants will not only eat it but will take it back to the nest, killing them all
ants hate fresh mint leaves
