The set is 20 years old and on the curving arms it's a mess from so many years of hands being on them. Can I clean it off as much as possible and then spray paint the whole set so it's the same color. Or what kind of paint do you use on rattan?

If it's not unraveling or something like that, you could totally clean it (I'd do a kitchen degreaser personally if it's been so long), then rinse off with wet towel before painting. For best durability, sand a bit through the shiny parts so the paint will stick better, and then use an outdoor grade spray paint. Lots of light coats to avoid drips!

Absolutely, paint the arms. I have seen people lately wrap the arms in twine, especially if the arms have actual damage. Paint the twine along with the arms. I would give the whole chair a couple of coats of waterproof poly, spray or brush, to preserve the rattan. If you can, buy some new cushions for the chair. In Sept. , all the lawn and garden furniture and accessories should be on sale. Best wishes 😇

yes you can...I would clean it good with TSP then give it a coat of primer and then my favorite is use Rustoleum spray paint in my favorite colors.
