cedar chips...will keep pests away.
Anything washable! Preferably soft and comfy yet warm and snuggly in cooler months.
We use cedar bedding, it seems to have the added benefit of repelling fleas. In colder weather the cedar shavings provide added insulation for your dog.
(or straw)- several generous inches of it! And be sure to check that it's staying clean & dry. That's what that animal protection groups around here distribute to dogs they find out in the cold.
Straw, more hollow than hay, insulates better

Many years ago when we had a doghouse, we used straw. It was inexpensive and provided a soft and warm bed.
Straw with maybe a good piece of outdoor weatherproof fabric you can wash. Smaller bedding may get stuck in the fur and not be inviting to enter the house.
