Try Murphy's Oil Soap, but you may need a good degreaser too.
Use a strong stiff scrubbing brush and bleach water. When the whole box has been scrubbed, then you can address any stains that bother you. If you are leaving it rustic, just lightly sand to remove any splintery edges and more of the stains. Don't forget the bottom! I suggest you rub in tung oil or boot wax to give the wood some moisture and bring out the grain and colors. Then seal the toolbox with two coats, glossy or matte. 😇

You could start the cleaning process with Dawn dish soap. It helps to eliminate the grease. An old toothbrush will get in to those corners. Then sand it. And then paint or stain. Best of luck to you.
