Hello Linda! Hometalk has a number of ideas for repurposing a headboard to a bench. Check them out.

Thank you!
Such a beautiful headboard and a wonderful idea to preserve it. You can also Google for ideas on storage bench designs from headboards.
Googling in progress, thanks!
3/4" osb board from hardware store for the sitting area. They can cut it to size before you leave the store. I would attach it with both deck screws and wood glue for durability. You can cut the footboard to size (assuming it has the same ornate design), flip it so the bottom is the design and add it to the front, bottom portion of your bench. It will probably also need a 2×4 or 2 for the support beams under the osb if you're wanting your bench to also last 66 years. Now you can either use 1x4's, stain them and attach to the top of osb as slats for seating or you can make yourself an oversized cushion in pattern if your choice. Have fun with it. I might even consider painting it.
What a beautiful keepsake. Love the storage bench idea. What a treasure to be passed on
Would love to see the final beauty!.
Thank you! These are the details I needed.
I promise I will post a photo of the finished repurposed head board. Thanks for your encouragement, Mary Ann!

How do I make a storage bench from old bed headboard and footboard?
Well God Bless you Linda. What a wonderful opportunity to save not just a treasure but a lot of memories I'm sure. Keep us posted - it's beautiful already but we are anxious to see what you do with it.
That is a beautiful bed, much older I think than your husband. It would be a shame to destroy it but you should be able to complete the project easily, by just constructing a box for storage and putting it against the head board, (make box same length) fastening the head board to the wall and the box, should not destroy the integrity of the head board. Good luck!
I know, I do have reservations about repurposing it and it is probably much older than he. The reality is we live in a one bedroom cabin and we've outgrown the bed and have nowhere to put it. I don't want money for it, so I would never sell it. By repurposing it, we can still enjoy it in a new way. Thanks for your input--that's a great idea to make the box first and attach it to the headboard to keep the integrity of it. I wouldn't have thought of that myself! This is my first DIY project ever!
OMG what a beautiful piece. I absolutely LOVE it. Look at that carving. Be still my heart. Bless you for wanting to keep it and repurpose it. It will certainly be a family heirloom to be passed down for generations. Blessings to you.
