You could paint it, that would be the easy and cheapest option but what about tile? With the surface of the bricks, that gives optimal texture for bonding tile to the surface.

Painting or whitewashing are both great options, it depends on the look you want, whitewashing is a bit more rustic looking. Here are some links on both options;

I would NOT paint. This is a passing fad, and may affect your ability to sell in the future. People like brick. Change your decorations, A nice painting above. Pretty things on the hearth.
