Go to your local ace,Home Depot,Lowes and buy 1 roll of contact paper colored. Clean the surface with eye glass cleaner pads and apply the contact paper to what ever you like style and cut away the excess with a sheetrock knife....
you've bleached the spot. Lightly sand. Use scratch cover that is a color match. Then carefully poly, feathering out from the center of the spot. Less is more. Good luck. The other alternative is to lightly scuff up the entire top and use a poly shade that stains and poly/stains in one step.
what like of wood? I've seen tricks using an actual walnut and rubbing it over wood.
TRY RUBBING FIREPLACE ASHES MIXED WITH OLIVE OIL, THE OLIVE OIL IS ALSO GOOD FOR REPLENISHING WOOD WHEN USED AS A POLISH
Thank you everyone for all the great suggestions!!!
clean off anything you have tried to use with rubbing alcohol and let dry. take a bbq lighter and hold the flame so it is bent on the surface and wave it back and forth over the spot. depending on how deep the ring is, should take about 20 minutes.
