i would lightly sand the top and stain it dark. Or paint it dark. For the legs you should sand then use chalk paint. After it drys you can sand to white wash. Be sure to seal the table to prevent chipping.
Strip it with Citristrip, sand and then restain the top and paint the legs. Here is a Pinterest link for you to explore! Have fun!

good sand and varnish it
Take the finish off the top by sanding or stripping. Stain darker. On the apron and legs, I would lightly sand off the shine, you can use Liquid Sandpaper, and then prime and paint. I like a satin finish myself, easier to clean also. On the top, you can poly it, or I like a spar varnish spray and a light sand then a paste wax finish.
Do a darker brown for the top to get to the dark brown you want. Chalk paint the rest and seal with a good sealer. Research chalk paint colors to make a very unique and beautiful table and chairs.
Hello Jaymie Tebbe :) My dad used to do a lot of woodworking in his shop in our basement, and one thing I've learned is that different folks like doing it different ways. I am posting links on whitewashing furniture, and links on staining with dark colors, and you get to choose which way for both is the technique that YOU like best ;)

I love the dark stain he uses in this video and although he said earlier in the video to use a dry rag, he uses a wet one on the stain (dry rag is for use on the whitewash):
