How big is big? New, old, recurring? Can also be a sign of foundation problems. There are do it yourself kits, not my forte, I hire a licensed plasterer.
You need to clean all the loose plaster then if there are big gaps put mixed plaster in gap and after that firms. Make sure the plaster you put in is flat with a plastering knife. Then you will need to cut strips of Sheetrock tape. Not the paper but the fabric type and from one end to the other of crack place tape. The tape should have crack and clean wall attached. Then you will need to put three thin layers of plaster, let each dry and sand softly until you have a smooth transition and crack has disapeared. If the crack keeps moving you will need to use staples to connect before taping
very large cracks need sanding the replaster. Get the netting type of tape to cover the crack the plaster over in steps.
There's a special lightweight DAP for cracks and you will need the corret tool to smooth it.
