can you post a pic of the rain barrel? Most tend to go under the downspout from your gutter so it collects the water in larger amounts.
If you have a shed or a part of the house with a down spout I would put it there. I added a gutter and down spout to one f my sheds having it go right into the barrel. I also put mine on 2 concrete blocks to raise it up a little. This just helped the water flow better for me. I just had temporary rain barrels and would have to take them in for the winter. One I left out and it froze and cracked.
