Sand it down lightly to give your paint something to "grab" onto. Prime and paint sanding lightly between coats, making sure to carefully remove all dust before applying the next coat until you have achieved the coverage you're looking for.

First I would lightly sand the vanity. This will help the paint stick. Make sure you prime before you paint. When I redid mine I took off all of the door and drawers and removed the hardware. Then I was able to do refinish them outside. I still had the base of the vanity to do inside but it wasn't as bad as doing it all in the bathroom. Once it is primed and painted you can add a thin coat of polyurethane over the paint. This will seal it in and also make it easier to clean.
