Cheryl, RIT dye may not be your best answer. Leather dye is specifically made to be absorbed by leather and dries in a way that allows buffing. RIT dye is water based and needs to be diluted. Leather dye is available online or from a local shoe repair store. It comes in many colors. Good luck!
Do not dip your leather bag in a bowl of dye. Take old towel of cloth and dip into dye and then rub onto purse in circular motions both clockwise and counter clockwise. Work in small sections for even application. Air dry is best. Too much heat can warp your leather. Once dry, take a soft bristle brush and brush over purse to break up any concentrated spots. Good luck.
