Any advice on the use of water based stains on concrete floors?

Husband and I are pulling up old wall to wall carpet. We have cement underneath and there is the mess of old paint drips, carpet pad mastic, and our very favorite, those carpet wood strips and nails! We know we don't want the mess of acid staining, so if anyone had had experience with this project we would love to hear from you.
