Some plastics leach chemicals, so I would think twice about using them for vegetables. Otherwise I would make sure you put drainage holes in the bottom, gravel or rocks first to help drainage. I put landscape fabric down to keep the soil from going out the drainage holes, then use your standard soil mixture that you normally use. Before you do all this, I would suggest decorating the bucket in the manner that you want to go with the decor you already have or want.
