Get a shower curtain liner for your floor. Use newspaper on to and strip. Then use a rag and your choice of stain.

If they are real wood? You can lightly sand, clean with a damp cloth or tacky cloth. And then use an all-in-one Staind and sealer. The all-in-one will cut down a step or two.

Or you can lightly sand hand sand, wipe with a damp rag and paint

Use a gel stain, it will cover the item in one coat. Be sure to look up detailed instructions on how to gel stain over existing stain. It is easy to apply and if you use an old sock or rag and disposable gloves you could do this in the kitchen on some newspaper

I would recommend Gel stain as well. General Finish is wondeful tonuse and easy to apply.

If you want to use a transparent stain, you generally sand down to the wood then re-stain with the darker stain. If that's a bit too messy, then painting is always an option and there are opaque stains available.
