If it's tongue and groove, you absolutely have to start at the wall (tongue facing middle of the room).
Insert a shim against the wall to leave room for the wood to expand. Once the floor is laid, remove the shim and hide the gap with quarter-round.

Alyssa is absolutely right. Start at the wall for sure. Laying ceramic tile is different. You start in center for tile. I hope this helps you. Good luck.
Alyssa has got it. Always start at the longest wall. Ceramic tile in the center so any cut tile will be against the walls.
Be sure you start at a rightangle - to be sure flooring will not run out to one side!
You should use the wall as a starting point if you are laying a wood floor.
