Hello Donna! It's hard to choose what to put there. The link below gives you some ideas.

Our stairway is in the living room, so is very visible. We have hung a collection of images of women's heads all the way up. Some are original paintings, some prints, some are family, some not. We like a very full look, so they cover pretty much all the wall. This is wall before we switched to only women's heads.
Hi Donna. I decorated our stairs with photos. I have all different size of frames.
stairs is always great for family pictures
Whatever you put on the staircase wall should be placed higher than an adult's shoulder level. My elderly father fell down the stairs once when he touched the staircase wall for balance. The picture he touched fell off the wall and he fell down the bottom 4 stairs. Luckily he wasn't hurt too badly, but after that we removed most of the "gallery" and kept just a couple of them. Higher up, of course. It would be safer for kids, as well to mount them above where they can reach.
It would help if you outlined your decorating style and budget. If you are looking for a budget friendly redo- Collect old black and white photos of your ancestor's or others. Have them blown up 8x12, 11x14 at least . Collect frames from thrift store with a silver colored wood frames (or even spray paint them. Mat the pictures in the frames.
Buy frames at the dollar store, spray them different colosr and clip enamel your pictures from Magnolia Journal. A cheap easy fix, Use an odd number of frames, hang them at eye level. Orange enamel looks great or gold.
