I put copper solar light caps on mine. If you don't want a cap of any kind, use a good water proofed like Olympic water proofed/sealer.

Cut the tops at an angle on top not flat use water protection . Use clear silicone in the cracks if staining and exterior paintable caulk before painting
Old farmer round by me uses plastic milk bottles. Cut off just below the handle, they are the right size for his fence posts & are fixed on with a couple of tacks
