There are different products available at your large home improvement stores.
I have done this with great results. I used to be a decorative painter. I had pink kitchen counters.... Need I say more? The most important discovery I made was a primer made by Glidden called "GRIPPER." It's water based and will adhere to ANYTHING. It is nothing like other primers so DO NOT SAND IT. It encases whatever it is put onto. After taping around the sink insert, and the wall, roll on or using a paint brush the Gripper primer. Let dry well. Then use a flat paint of whatever color you choose. I did a faux granite paint effect and then I sealed it with a latex garage floor sealer. I used two coats of the sealer. The key is to let the paint cure before using the area exposed to a lot of water. My kitchen counter came out amazing and lasted until I left the house. I don't recomment chalk paint, especially near water. Gripper will adhere to formica and melamine and anything with poly on it already. It's great stuff. Remember to never sand it so be careful about drips when applying. Good luck
