Oh I would like to see those ideas also... I have been thinking the same with the day bed I have and no couch! Would have to mak a back and arms.... so think I will just sell it!
A picture of what your talking about would sure help to make suggestions.
wedge style bolsters ( JCPenneys, Amazon, Bed, bath & beyond all have them) will make it more comfortable to sit on and if you can lower it, perhaps cut the legs, that will make all the difference
Go for it! Use jumbo pillows for the back rest, even if you need to do some structural modification. Can you post a photo?

We did that. We put oversized pillows on it all around. People who came to our home knew it was our daughter's bed and understood we had very little room. So we used her daybed for our couch too. For something permanent, you might attach the over sized pillows with ties and put a heavier material on them to match a cover for the seat part.
