Hi Brenda, If I understand you correctly, you are looking for a way to kill out a bush and small tree? First, cut the bush and tree as close to the ground as possible, then drill a hold in the trunk of the tree as deep as you can get (at least 2 inches, but 3-4 would be better) and fill the hole with salt and slowly water down the salt with vinegar. Since it is a small tree it would be great if you can find a can that will toatally cover the trunk when placed over it so you can block out all light and oxygen by sharpening the edge of the can and pounding it down into the ground. In this manner you are killing only the tree and the tree roots, but if you can not get a can upside down over the stump of the trunk then try to cover it with a plastic bucket that can be weighted down to hold it in place or even with newspaper about 5 or 6 pages thick and wet it down with vinegar and cover THAT with black plastic bags that are weighted down around the edges to keep light and oxygen out. Leave it like that for a year or more. It should be dead when you finally decide (after a year at least) to remove it, and the surrounding turf should be fine. BUT if all else fails take some large pots of water and get it boiling hot. Pour the boiling water over the tree stump and around its perimeter until the ground where the water has been poured has steam coming out of it. It may take 3 or 4 large pots or more (I'm talking about a pot that will hold 8 quarts of water). Then repeat the process the next day. Wait for 2-3 days to see if you can see a difference in the color of the tree stump, then repeat the process one more time. The tree will be dead because you have boiled its roots, but the surrounding grass and plants will also be dead and the ground will be sterile. It will have to heal for a year or two before you can amen the earth with ferilizer and healthy soil and replant something else. Concerning the bush, same thing except IF you cannot drill into it to put salt and vinegar in it, just go for boiling water with vinegar and very heavy salt poured over it area followed by plain boiling water just like with the tree. Yes it WILL ALSO kill the surrounding grass and plants, but you won't have to worry about paying to have the bush dug out.
