What is the best bird house to actually use for birds?

The Garden Frog with C Renee on Feb 28, 2014The size of the hole can determine what bird will take residence in your birdhouses. Bluebirds like a specific birdhouse usually out of cedar and with a 1 1/2" hole and the height is important too @ 5'. some birds like 1 1/4" for a Titmouse and Nuthatch. An interesting fact is that male wrens will build houses in anything that is sitting or hanging around your yard such as any decorative birdhouses or objects with an entry. {I have had them make nests in a car washing mitt hanging on the clothesline.} The female wren will then check out the nest after he calls her to inspect it and she will tell him if she likes it-if not, he is off to find another place to build a nest. You also want to watch the placement as well because bluebirds like the birdhouse to be facing a bush or tree that they can perch upon and see their entrance before flying into the house. There is a lot of information on the internet and if you know what kind of birds you have flying around then google the details for holes, placement, and size. some birds are territorial too so you have to keep this in mind. Another important note: if you build or buy a birdhouse, make sure you can clean it out too.Helpful Reply

Charlotte MacDiarmid on Mar 02, 2014I purchased a good sized gourd with a hole drilled in it.. Last year I had a family of wrens in it and this year, already, the sparrows are working hard to build a nest. I also have three smaller sized gourds that the birds love too. Make sure there are holes drilled in the bottom of the gourd so rain water can run out.. I have the gourds hanging in trees in my back yard..Helpful Reply
