Dead head them as the blooms die off, you should get an undergrowth coming forward then. If you mean for winter, I wait until they all die and then cut to about 1-2'' above the ground
in the spring, when green begins to appear in the plant, just snap off the old branches.
When they wither and die. I continually deadhead to produce more blooms.
Just about any time after they bloom.
