Consult an electrician. My husband runs a big fat cable with a special type of plug to our dryer outlet and can run lights, fridges, and ceiling fans this way but I couldn't begin to tell you what's involved because an electrician set it up for us a few years back,

This is a job for an electrician. You would need a transfer switch, either manual or automatic, hooked up to the circuits you want to operate with the generator when power goes out. It's not a job for a DIY.

Buy the generator transfer switch kit. The typical configuration has 1 double-pole and 4 single-pole switches. When wired properly, can safely switch power as needed.

As there is also some generator repair service NJ team who can able to make all the necessary electrical connections.
