When does lawn 'mulch' become 'thatch' ?
I live in Florida where lawns are primarily St. Augustine grass. Lots of mulch from mowing without a grass catcher - "good" amount of mulch. So when does this "mulch" become THATCH ? My other half says if we De-thatch with a typical dethatching implement it will tear up too much living (vines) grass. I, on the other hand wonder if it has become THATCH.

Mulch can add to the problem, but it generally isn't the problem since most mulch from grass clippings decomposes in a couple of weeks. The thatch is made up of the roots of the grass, stems, clippings and so on that has become matted over time.
